VENTILATION: One of the barriers against COVID-19

Is opening windows enough to fight the virus? Does the virus spread more easily with ventilation?

This year ventilation has been a topic of conversation in households across North America. ALDES is here to provide clarity and answer your questions!  A specialist in indoor air quality, ALDES sheds light on what you need to know about the importance of ventilation in light of COVID-19.

Opening windows is sufficient in removing the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

FALSE. Opening windows is easy to do, but it is not enough because it helps to dilute the concentration of the virus only while the window is open. Opening windows can also have negative thermal and acoustic impacts as well as poor air quality when the outside environment is polluted. It must be supplemented by a mechanical ventilation system (CMEV) to ensure a continuous and controlled renewal of air, so as to avoid an accumulation of CO2. A high concentration of CO2 reflects poor ventilation and may therefore contribute to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. (1)

Mechanical ventilation reduces the risk of transmission.

TRUE. Mechanical ventilation reduces the risk of transmission of the virus by a factor of 10. (2) It is safe to say that a well-ventilated room lowers the risk of transmission and is better for your health.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus can live several days suspended in the air.

FALSE. The virus is spread either by droplets or by airborne microparticles. It can stay several hours in suspension. Maintaining ventilation is therefore essential for renewing the air and preventing the virus from remaining airborne. (3)

Once captured by the filter, the virus dies.

TRUE. The filter will not let the virus escape and go through the ventilation system – Once captured by the filter, the virus dries and dies by itself. (4)

The use of stand-alone air purifiers in a room is enough to free the air from the virus.

FALSE. An air purifier does not renew the air. It is a good complement to mechanical ventilation, which constantly renews the air, treats other indoor air pollutants and thus meets regulatory ventilation standards.

Older buildings do not have ventilation solutions to renew air.

FALSE. There are different mechanical ventilation solutions available and suitable for refurbishment, which guarantee a continuous renewal of the air in each room of the home. An older building does not mean that the ventilation system is inadequate. (5)

The Aldes CAR3, winner of the Ventilation Innovation Award at the 2021 AHR Expo

The 2021 AHR Expo supposed to be held in Chicago early next year, was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the organiser’s annual awards event, which usually occurs at the same time as the show, still took place! This annual competition honors the most inventive and original products, systems and technologies showcased at the AHR Expo. Aldes’ Vertical Fan-Coil Unit was also amongst the finalists of the Ventilation Innovation category last year.

Submissions were collected over the summer and then reviewed by a panel of third-party judges made up of distinguished ASHRAE members. The competitors are evaluated based on overall innovative design, creativity of the product or service offered, application, as well as value and market impact. “We continue to be surprised by what the innovators in this industry bring to market,” said Mark Stevens, Show Manager. “Despite the challenges 2020 has presented, we are committed to recognizing the incredible innovators in our industry.”

The CAR3® constant airflow regulators feature a state-of-the-art design with industry exclusive dual-side airflow adjustability and greater airflow ranges for a variety of applications. The patent pending airflow technology allows you to set or change the airflow quickly, in supply or exhaust applications, without removing the CAR3 from the duct. The CAR3 solely operates on duct pressure and requires no external power supply or sensors, and will be rated for use in air temperatures ranging from -25°F to 140°F (-32°C to 60°C). Each regulator features a dual-side adjustment dial to allow for changes in airflow setpoint while installed in either the supply or exhaust direction without removing the regulator from the duct. The constant airflow regulator is enhanced with antimicrobial, anti-static, and flame-retardant additives for increased durability.

Ventilation and COVID-19

At Aldes, healthy indoor air is not just what inspires us, it is what we deliver.  During these past few months of the COVID-19 crisis, we have all listened as infectious disease experts have attempted to provide answers to innumerable questions surrounding the transmission of the virus.

Many of those questions are from homeowners and building maintenance managers wondering how to reduce the spread of COVID-19 within a building or home using their HVAC system.

An abstract of a study published recently in the journal of Respiratory Medicine, The Lancet, links mechanical ventilation with a dramatic reduction in the time that droplets containing COVID-19 stay airborne in a room.  The more air exchange that an area gets, the less time particles remain in the air at mouth-level where they can be transmitted from person to person.  The study shows that in a well-ventilated space, the average time for half of the particles to fall is 30 seconds, whereas in the same space without ventilation, the time is over 5 minutes – that is 10 times longer!

Knowing this, to help keep yourself safe if you are in close proximity to someone who may have  COVID-19, it is very important to ensure that your ventilation system is operational and well-maintained.

If you have an HRV or ERV:

  • Ensure that the filters are clean.
  • Remove any blockages in the intake and exhaust grilles on the outside of the building.
  • Set the HRV to air exchange mode. High speed will bring in more outdoor air and move the air faster.
  • Do the “tissue test” at the air supply and exhaust grilles to ensure that air is flowing. Take a tissue and hold it up to the grille. It should quickly stick to the exhaust grilles and quickly blow away from air supply grilles.  If the tissue test shows no airflow at one or more grilles, contact a ventilation contractor.
  • Keep inside doors open at least slightly to allow air to flow freely in and out of the ventilation system.

Remember, the important thing is for the “bad” air to be replaced by fresher air.  Do not use ceiling fans or pedestal fans that recirculate air within the same room – in fact, these can be even worse than having no ventilation at all!

Finally, opening a window is always a great way to increase the air exchange when weather permits.

Aldes is at the forefront of Healthy Living – delivering fresh air to occupants of all buildings, for health, well-being and a better life for all of us.
