Bathroom fans: on the way out?
Instead of a bathroom fan, it's more cost-effective for builders and homeowners to use HRVs and ZRTs. Not only is the initial cost of materials and installation lower, so is the cost of operation.
Instead of installing individual fans that waste energy and require separate ducts to the outside, it's more advantageous to install zone airflow controllers that deliver exhaust air to the HRV at the right place, at the right time, while recovering almost all the heat from the exhaust air.
And there are many other advantages:
- The building envelope will be tighter and the exterior of the house more aesthetically pleasing (fewer penetrations required);
- Better-balanced ventilation, avoiding negative pressure in the house;
- A quieter living environment;
- Prevents the user from leaving a fan running by mistake for extended periods.
